How to Decorate a Gray Wall Bedroom

Cream and gray is a modern combination used to create a scheme that is soothing and gender neutral. When balanced correctly, the two hues work well in almost any room of the house and can be integrated in different ways to accommodate the room's functionality. Be careful to not let a small space get overwhelmed by dark grays, and keep the balance between the shades even, for a sophisticated, contemporary look.

In the Living Room

Keep things bright in the most utilized room in your house by using cream as the wall color. This allows you to use gray for couches and seating, which makes for a great option in high-traffic rooms, as they will show wear and dirt less than cream.

Choose a rug that will tie the look together, such as gray with cream detail. Use occasional tables that are metal and glass or dark-stained wood. Accessorize walls with black and white photography or choose a bright accent color, such as red, teal or lime green, to incorporate art, pillows and decorative pieces.

In the Office

Gray is a sophisticated color option for walls in a home office or study. Choose a light-to-medium shade that is not too dark, and brighten it up with cream details throughout the room. A dark wood or glass desk looks best, so brighten things up with a leather chair in cream. Use drapes over windows in a shade of gray that is darker than the walls. Homedit says adding metallic details, such as a brass curtain rod, can really make a cream and gray living room pop.

Add cream-colored crown molding to ceilings and floors for an even more elegant touch. If there is a fireplace in the room, consider painting the wall behind it in cream. Add framed art, set in wide cream mats, to break up the walls; or a gallery wall with multiple photos matted in cream.

In the Bedroom

The bedroom is an optimal place to use patterns for a good mix of the contrasting hues. Use bold gray and cream stripes of damask either for bed linens or for wallpaper in the room. If the walls are striped, keep the bedding and drapes solid gray and add decorative pillows in gray and cream patterns.

If the walls are solid, choose a soothing blue-gray and use cream drapes or vice versa. Mix in some color with bright shades of red, blue or pink in accessories and art, making sure the art is matted if the walls are striped.

For a cream and gray color scheme, Fletcher Design Consultants suggest starting with a few accent pillows that include both colors. They report that this makes the color combination appear intentional.

In the Kitchen or Bath

Tile is an interesting way to incorporate this color combination in the kitchen or bathroom. Install a tile backsplash in the kitchen or behind the bathroom sink, using glass micro-tiles in cream and varying shades of gray. Or, for an uber-modern touch, use white glass subway tiles with a dark gray grout. Tile throughout or paint adjacent walls in either cream or a light gray to keep these areas, which tend to be smaller, from getting too dark. Dress with floor mats and towels in gray.
